I have another of these violins with a more complete tag, purchased from the same antique shop in Washington, so although part of the name is worn off on this one I believe this violin to have been made by August A. Westman from Carnation, WA. A little internet research seems to indicate he was in WWI-- born in 1891 and died in 1968. If you're interested in history from that era it might be fun for you to try and dig up a little more about him, but that's as far as I got.The violin itself is in need of a serious overhaul. It seems to be a very sincere attempt at making a violin, but as you can hopefully see from the photos, a lot of it was crude. The maker had a good idea of what he was doing, but didn't have practical experience, from the looks of it. There is a lot of damage, the varnish is
extremely
thick and needs to come off, lots of repairs, tweaks, it is crudely carved, et cetera.
Despite all of that, it might be worth it for a history buff to restore it to working order, if you have the time and the skills, so it can be played the way the maker intended it to be. I thought I was going to tackle this project, but just don't have the time anymore.
Violin will be shipped in a soft foam case. The case is not high quality and has some damage, but should be fine to get it to you, and for you to store the instrument in until you finish it.
Please note:
I will be shipping with signature confirmation.
There's so much porch piracy these days, and this isn't really an item that can be replaced. I know it is kind of a pain in the rear sometimes, but just want to be sure the violin gets to
you.
Thank you for understanding!
