Unusual Painted All Bisque 6" Couple Strung Dolls in Ethnic Costuming Japan

Description

This pair of 6" all bisque dolls are unusual because of their larger size. They are stiff-necked dolls with jointed arms and legs. Their faces (lightly soiled) are sweetly painted with reddish brown brows, blue eyes detailed with painted upper lashes, rosy cheeks, and open mouths. They are dressed elaborately in European provincial costuming that sustains discoloration, spotting, tear, and wear. Their black painted shoes are chipped, while the girl is missing one of her earrings. Though unmarked, the dolls may have been manufactured in Japan, though their facial painting is reminiscent in some ways of the Unica Belgian dolls.  Just conjecturing--  They remain a cute vintage mystery couple!
