JavaRing will be an especially treasured and memorable keepsake and conversation piece!
What is it?
A JavaRing is a very handsome and comfortable stainless steel ring that contains a small microprocessor, each with a unique address and built-in capabilities for the user - a sort of smart card that is wearable on a finger - with 32 kilobytes of ROM and 6 kilobytes of NVRAM. 6K may not sound like much, but it's 20 percent more memory than the first computer some of us used back in high school, which could take up a lot of space. And now you can carry more computing power on your finger! Even 6K is enough to hold your secret codes, credit card numbers, driver's license information, other wallet contents, and even maybe some electronic cash. The ring may also be able to store a few important URLs. Indeed, one of the Java One Conference JavaRing demos showed the ability to walk up to any computer in the world that has a JavaRing reader and have your home page loaded simply by touching the ring to the reader.
The History:
Sun Microsystems' JavaRing, manufactured by Dallas Semiconductor, was introduced in 1998 at Sun's huge annual JavaOne Conference at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. Instead of a gemstone, the JavaRing contains an inexpensive microprocessor in a stainless-steel iButton running a Java Virtual Machine and preloaded with applets (little application programs) with a built-in Java Card 2.0 specification. Workstations at the conference had "ring readers" installed on them that downloaded information about the user from the conference registration system. This information was then used to enable a number of personalized services. For example, a robotic machine made coffee according to user preferences, which it downloaded when the attendee simply touched the ring to another "ring reader." Data was read from or written to the memory serially through a simple and inexpensive RS232C serial port adapter, which also supplied the power required to perform the I/O. The iButton memory was then read or written with a momentary contact to the "Blue Dot" receptor provided by the adapter.
These unique JavaRings are currently offered as a collectible memento and high-tech novelty. Originally manufactured by Dallas Semiconductor in 1998, they are still brand-new; yet there is
no guarantee
that they will work and perform all the tasks you would want, or are suitable for any particular purpose. However, there are adapters and Blue Dot receptor-readers and development kits available for the iButton, which is at the heart of this ring. (One happy return customer in Australia recently emailed us and told us he has been able to "read" his JavaRing with an Arduino and uses it as a backup security device... Another happy customer emailed us in October of 2016 to say, "Thank you so much. Using a USB to one-wire adapter and drivers built into Linux, I can read the ID from the ring, even 18 years after it was made!"; and in May of 2021, a customer gave us positive feedback, saying, "
Quick shipping, the ring came as described. I quickly whipped some Arduino code to check if it is still operational. 30 seconds later I got the ID from it. Fantastic."
).
Please Note: The Blue Dot receptor/reader is not included with the JavaRing; the photo of it on this page is for clarity and reference.
You can search the Internet or Google "Blue Dot Reader", "Java Ring" or "iButton" to connect to websites and do your own research for more product information if you wish to pursue the possibility of activating your JavaRing iButton. If unable to activate it, you still have a VERY RARE and handsome, highly collectible and comfortable stainless steel fashion ring that is certain to be a unique conversation piece, complete with the JAVA logo, "Sun Microsystems" engraved on the corona beneath the iButton, and Sun's unique stylized logo engraved on each side.
