Horn violin (Stroh violin) made by Hora Romania

Description

We wish to present you a special type of violin made by Hora musical instruments factory in Reghin, Romania. This violin is based on
quite old design patented in London, on 4
th
of May 1899 by John Matthias Augustus Stroh and known in the whole world as the Stroh
violin.
Mr. Stroh had the idea of combining the violin with a metalic horn based on the same working principle of the gramophone to try to make
the violin sound louder due to the fact that, at that time, there was no other option for an amplification. So he replaced the resonating body
of a classical violin with a horn. The instrument became suitable for outdoor performances due to its powerful sonority and was embraced
by the traditional music in Europe, from the Alps to the Tatra Mountains and Carpathians Mountains. In Romania, this violin is used in the
traditional folkloric music from Bihor county, but it can be used also in jazz, Irish and other kinds of music. The basic dimensions of a
classical violin are kept so any violonist can easily make the transition even though he never played one. The violin has the same neck size
and scale as a classical violin, the same fingerboard, bridge and tailpiece, but the main difference consists of its body. The body is made of
a single piece of maple with satin walnut color finishing. The bridge rests on a resonant membrane that picks up the vibrations to a thin
rod or needle which has the role of conducting mechanical vibrations so the resulting sound is amplified by the metalic horn. The body
allows to have a chinrest and a shoulder rest mounted in the same way as for a classical violin. The brass horn is placed in such a way that
allows the player an optimum and ergonomic interpretation, without obstructing the bow. Besides of these, the violin has a very beautiful
neck scroll. Also instead of the traditional pegs, this violin is equipped with a fine worm and wheel gear mechanism similar to those for
double bass and guitars. The reason is for offering a precise and stable tuning and add a great touch of design on the overall instrument.
The violin comes with a padded soft bag, helping for protection and transporting the violin.
