    Description

Brescian violin, 17th century, needs restoration. Unique scroll.
I bought this unique violin in Firenze Italy in 1995 from Carlo Vettori, violin maker and restorer (see photo of his book). He felt this instrument was from the Brescian school circa 17th century. It has a unique and interesting scroll that was typical of that period and region of Italy. It is not in playing condition and needs full restoration. The main problem is with the fingerboard and neck (see photos). The table and back are in remarkably good condition with few cracks. No bassbar or soundpost cracks. A small 7 mm crack in the table to the right of the neck mortise (see photo). Also a crack in the left side lower bout (see photo). The back and sides are mildly flamed maple. Top is fine italian spruce. Neck and head a different wood, possibly pear. Ivory or bone saddle. Measurements: length of back 359 mm, UB 165mm, MB 113, LB 206 mm.
