Description

This is the real-deal. Antique/Vintage Igal which my husband brought home when he and his family visited the Arabian Peninsula in the mid -to late 60s. I believe it is cotton.
An agal (Arabic:
عِقَال‎
,
ʿ
iq
ā
l: "bond" or"rope"), also spelled iqal, egal or igal, is an accessory worn usually by Arab men. It is a black cord, worn doubled, used to keep a ghutrahin place on the wearer's head. It is traditionally made of goat hair.
It is usually worn in the Arabian Peninsula(Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar), Mesopotamia and eastern Syria and southwestern Iran by Ahwazi Arabs and the Hola people.
The Igal is cord that is used to secure the scarf in place. Modern Igals are generally made of tightly woven black goat-hair and sheep's wool.
The Igal is usually worn sitting on top of the head just to hold the Scarf in place and is not suppose to be wrapped around the forehead like a hat.
