This is an early
G. Johnson
straight razor with
a 4/8" wide
(.50" - .56")
blade
and
translucent
bovine bone scales that are pressed on both sides with a design of lines and scallop shells. The scales are also decorated
on one side
with a round metal inlay and they have rosette washers all around.
The razor's tang is
stamped with a hammer and stars trademark
, indicating it was manufactured by George Johnson, who was in business in
Sheffield, England from about 1810 to 1855.
The blade
shows evidence of hone wear. T
here are no nicks in the cutting edge and the blade is free of any cracks.
The blade has a 2 3/4 inch cutting edge and seems to be the original full length. The blade is spotted with surface rust and pitting. The scales aren’t warped and they aren't
cracked
but they do have wear, and a name is etched into one side (see pictures)
. The blade fits snugly between the scales.
