    Description

    1777 Gentleman's Magazine (April)
    ~ American Revolution - American Affairs - B. Franklin
"American Independency no new System"; "Letter from Lord Howe to Dr. Franklin, June 20th, 1776, signed HOWE," concerning the potential for peace.  Includes a lengthy and interesting reply signed:  B. BRANKLIN.
"American Affairs" includes some interesting reading, including:  "...the terror they raised in the Americans, who trembled at the very name of an Hessian.  In a word, the rebellion seemed crushed.  There was no rebel army in the field; literally speaking, none.  Washington was fled to Philadelphia where he had a few hundreds, scarce sufficient to awe his personal enemies...you see us in triumph, without an enemy, masters of a delightful country..." and much more, including some talk of Washington's success at Trenton, etc.  This is truly a terrific article!  Also a proclamation by George Washington regarding those who swore allegiance to the United States to report to their nearest Continental Army or be treated as "common enemies to these American States."
    Excellent content in this issue!
Foldout map included but not listed in front page Contents:  "A Plan of the Navigable Canal from the Town of STROUD to the River Severn at Framiload in the County of Glocester  (Surveyed in 1775)"
Magazine measures about 8-3/8" x 5-1/8"; one plate called for is not included.
